A Review of It's kind of a funny story
It's Kind Of A Funny Story is a movie that is adapted from Ned Vizzini's novel of the same name. It follows the journey of a clinically depressed teenage boy as he enters into the psych ward of his local hospital. The film opens with Craig, the movie's main character, contemplating suicide. He scares himself that he is thinking this way and immediately rides his bike to the hospital and checks himself in. Craig thinks that it will be a quick visit/fix and he will be out in no time, but he is put in with the adults because the adolescent ward is being redone. Craig must stay in the hospital for a week to be observed and helped by the doctors there. He sees himself as normal and all the other patients as insane. He does befriend Bobby, an adult man who is in the ward for attempting suicide 6 times, and they become very close. While in the hospital his family comes to visit and they proceed to stress him out about all the school work he is missing and how his application for a honors summer camp is going to be late. Craig's friend's girlfriend (with whom he is infatuated with) comes to visit him too and they make out. He and his friend get in an argument over the phone. Craig meets a girl named Noelle who is in the ward because she self-harms. He befriends her and soon develops romantic feelings towards her. This film documents Craig's journey of getting help and getting better after going through depression. It is a feel-good movie that has romance and comedy mixed in. Craig is played by Keir Gilchrist, Bobby is played by Zach Galifianakis, and Noelle is played by Emma Roberts. The film was directed by Anna Boyden and Ryan Fleck and was released in 2010. It has a PG-13 rating for mature thematic issues, sexual content, drug material and language. The film is extremely enlightening to those who do not know much about mental illnesses and leaves everyone wanting to watch more long after it is over.
